Late!: Pocketwatch (Dave Grohl Demo Tape)

Pocketwatch is a cassette album by Dave Grohl, under the pseudonym Late!, released in 1992 on the now defunct indie label Simple Machines as part of their Tool Cassette Series.

Background:
In the summer of 1991, Dave Grohl went into WGNS Studios and recorded four songs, playing all the instruments himself. The recording was combined with six songs from a previous Upland Studios session recorded in late 1990. Although both sessions occurred after joining Nirvana, Grohl unobtrusively acknowledged their existence. A tape of the songs, given to Simple Machines co-founder Jenny Toomey by Grohl, immediately became a candidate for the labels Tool Cassette Series. The 1990 sessions emerged as Grohl, then the drummer of Scream, requested his producer friend Barrett Jones to record songs in his home 8-track tape recorder. Upon accepting Simple Machines' request for a demo tape, Grohl decided to hide his identity under the pseudonym Late!, "because I’m an idiot and I thought it would be funny to say to everybody, 'Sorry, we’re Late!’".

Q Lazzarus: Goodbye Horses Collection

A collection of singles, b-sides and demos from Q Lazzarus.

 

Notes:

Diane Luckey (1960-2022), known professionally as Q Lazzarus. A mysterious singer who is most well-known for the song "Goodbye Horses," which featured first in the 1988 film Married To The Mob and then again (and most famously) in the 1991 film The Silence Of The Lambs. She has also contributed music to the films Philadelphia and Something Wild. To this day, not much is known about her or her backing band, but Goodbye Horses has become a cult classic.

 

This collections is made up of two singles; tracks found on the original 1991 12" Single and 2017 Goodbye Horses EP. Track four is taken from the compilation Retro:Active2 (Rare & Remixed) which was released in 2004. I far as I can tell this is the first time the Extended Version appeared on CD (it also featured on the soundtrack to Clarks II but not until 2006). It has a different sound to the source used for track one (I suspect track one is a remaster or a new source as it's the clearest version I've heard to date). Track four sounds like it may have been a rip from the 12" Single.

The Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants Sessions is a collection of demo recordings, b-sides, promo tracks and other rarities from Oasis.

Background:
These songs were recorded in Noel’s home studio at Supernova Heights and at Wheeler End Studios with the assistance of Mark Coyle and Paul Stacey between 1998 and early 1999.  All tracks are sung by Noel with the exception of Little James which is sung by Liam.

“The thing about Standing on the Shoulder of Giants is that I had a full year to sit in my 16-track bedroom studio with an engineer friend and make demos, whereas the demo sessions for Be Here Now were finished in two weeks and they were really rough. We didn’t bother about what sounds we were going to use, or the arrangements, or anything. I thought, “We’ll work all that out when we get to the studio.”  This time, however, I had basically done the album twice before it even got to the band. I had written and recorded the songs on a little Walkman, and then I demoed the tracks on ADATs in my bedroom. And we ended up using a lot of stuff from the demos on the actual record because the demos were that good.” – Noel Gallagher,  guitarplayer.com, 2000

15 tracks were leaked onto the Internet via a private FTP on the 31st January 2000. These songs are known to have been recorded during these demo sessions before the band converged to the south of France with Mark Stent to record the album proper.

A collection of Singles, B-sides & Rarities from Hurricane #1

Notes: 

Hurricane #1 are an English rock band, formed in Oxford in 1996. The band were formed by former Ride guitarist Andy Bell, along with vocalist/guitarist Alex Lowe, bassist Will Pepper and drummer Gareth "Gaz" Farmer. After releasing two albums, Hurricane #1 (1997) and Only the Strongest Will Survive (1999), the band broke-up. Bell went to join Gay Dad and then eventually Oasis, while Lowe ventured into a solo career. Fronted by Lowe, the band reformed in 2014 and released their third album, Find What You Love and Let It Kill You, in November 2015.

This collection is tracks taken from singles released between 1997 to 1999 and some rarities taken from the 2004 compilation album "Step into My World". This isn't a definitive collection as there are a few b-sides missing but this is everything I have.

Longpigs were a British alternative rock band who rose to fame on the fringe of Britpop in the 1990s, comprising Crispin Hunt (vocals), Richard Hawley (guitar), Simon Stafford (bass guitar) and former Cabaret Voltaire member Dee Boyle (drums) who was replaced by Andy Cook (drums) on their second album. Hailing from Sheffield, the group had success with singles such as "She Said", "On and On", and their well-received debut album The Sun Is Often Out (1996). source

Notes:
Whenever discusing underrated 90s bands it usually won't belong until someone metions the Longpigs. A friend recommended them to me over a decade ago, up until that point I had never heard of them before which surprised me as they sounded exactly like the kind of band I would have been into during the mid to late 90s (if I wasn't busy listening to Oasis on an almost constant loop that is).
As the years have gone by I've come to like Longpigs more and more but it's putting this mix tape together I've really begun to appreciate what a great collection of songs are in their back catalogue.
It's a real shame that there has been an official "Complete Collection" or singles boxset released in the 20 years since the band split as that would be a must buy for me. In 2013 saw the release of "On And On: The Anthology" by 3 Loop Music but it seems to have been done with no involvement with any member of the band. So I've put this mix tape together of singles, b-sides and rarities. This isn't a definitive collection as there are a few b-sides missing but this is everything I have.
